Makeup Artist Katey Denno on Her Favorite (Multi-Tasking) Makeup Remover

Woman who has overcome hormonal acne

At True Botanicals, we like to consider ourselves problem solvers. We create products with real life skin concerns in mind. And sure, they may smell great or look luxurious, but first and foremost, it’s important to us that they really work.

So, when we heard from you, our customers, that you were struggling to get rid of makeup, sunscreen and other built-up product on your skin, we headed straight to the lab to start formulating. Several months (and many test runs!) later, our makeup remover, Pre Cleanse Oil, was born.

A beautiful blend of nourishing oils —jojoba, sesame and apricot kernel, to be exact —our Pre Cleanse Oil makeup remover is your first line of defense against makeup, dirt, sunscreen and all the other gunk that can clog your pores and contribute to skin congestion. Just massage gently onto dry (dirty, makeup-covered) skin. Follow up with your cleanser of choice and watch that grime rinse right down the drain.

And while we’re total smitten with this multitasking addition to our nightly routine, we had to make sure it really delivered. So, we put it to the ultimate test: we asked celebrity makeup artist (and our dear friend) Katey Denno to give it a try. Here’s what she had to say:

Why use Pre Cleanse Oil as a makeup remover?

At the end of a typical day, the average woman has put at least most of the following things onto her face: moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation or tinted moisturizer, blush, concealer, eye makeup, powder, dirt from her fingers, dirt from her cell phone and dirt from the air. Before bed, this woman might cleanse with a pre-moistened wipe or half-heartedly rub some face wash into her skin and finish with a few splashes of water. Or, worse, she might use a face wash with harsh ingredients to remove the mask of debris that’s accumulated, leaving her skin feeling squeaky clean but disrupting the delicate homeostasis of her skin in the process.

As a makeup artist, I often work with the same client multiple days in a row, which means I’m privy to many of their skincare secrets. On days after a heavy makeup application I often find that my clients have stripped their skin in order to remove all traces of makeup, which in turn sends their skin into a really difficult cycle. Adding a pre cleanse oil is my new favorite way to advise my clients to remove what I’ve painted on their face. Oil dissolves oil, which is really what’s holding all that dirt and debris on the skin. So, once it’s broken down, the dirt and makeup can be washed away using the gentlest of cleansers.

Do you have a Pre Cleanse Oil technique?

KD: I love massaging 7-10 drops of the Pre Cleanse Oil into my skin at night and then going about various routines. I brush my teeth, answer a few e-mails or pack lunch for the next day. Then, whether in the shower or at the sink, I lather up with cleanser and watch everything rinse easily down the drain without leaving my cheeks tight or my skin flaky.

The act of massaging a deliciously scented product into the face is both good for the mood and good for the skin.

What else can Pre Cleanse Oil do?

This Pre Cleanse Oil is special in that it doesn’t contain any surfactants, so it doesn’t have to just be used as a makeup remover. You can apply it before you shower to protect your skin from the damage of harsh hot water. You can apply it before you work out to give your skin an extra dose of moisture. You can run a little through the ends of your hair to tame flyaways. You can use it as a pre or post shave oil. You can use it as a cuticle conditioner. It smells so good that you could use it as a light personal fragrance. And you can even tap a drop or two onto your cheekbones, cupids bow and bridge of your nose for a little end of day rehydration and extra glow. The options really are endless!
