Designer Jenni Kayne Talks Style, Skincare, and Motherhood

We’ve spent a lot of time in Jenni Kayne stores lately (we know, lucky us) thanks to our recent partnership with the brand, so we can attest to how warm and inviting the Jenni Kayne aesthetic is. Soft fabrics, simple accents, and chic everyday designs. Everything is elevated yet uncomplicated with a California twist—inspired, of course, by creator, Jenni Kayne, who started the brand when she was 19. We had the chance to talk with her about style, skincare, and motherhood.

How would you describe your designs/style?
JK.

My style is all about classic design that never goes out of style. I’m inspired by new looks but I don’t follow trends—I believe in wearing functional, high-quality pieces that work for me and my lifestyle. Consistency is key. Getting dressed in the morning is effortless when you know what you like and what works for you. I pay attention to a lot of small details in all of my designs. From our apparel to our tableware collections, everything is purposeful yet beautiful. Bringing beauty into your everyday is one of the best ways to take care of yourself.

TB. What’s your daily beauty routine like?
JK.

I’ve always been mindful of what I put into my body, but being pregnant with my son Tanner really made me think more about how important it is to care for yourself with products that are safe and natural. I was horrified when I heard there are toxins in so many of our everyday products. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but I like to cleanse my face at night with Eve Lom Gel Balm cleanser, then follow with a reishi mushroom serum that my favorite acupuncturist recommended. I love serums—my favorites from True Botanicals are the Deep Repair Eye Serum and the Renew Cellular Repair Serum. After serums, I like to layer hydrating balms during the evening and use oil during the day. I love mixing in the boosters—they feel so nourishing.

What do you do to relax?
JK.

I grew up riding horses and it always brings me a really centered sense of calm. I love taking my daughter with me—it’s a special way for us to bond. I’m obsessed with baths, and I love making different blends of salts or dried florals to soak in.

What’s your favorite way to spend time outdoors?
JK.

I love being outdoors—I’m so inspired by the natural landscape around me. There are so many beautiful places to hike around Los Angeles—my favorite is in Topanga Canyon, it’s a beautiful ocean-view hike with amazing views. I grew up spending summers in Lake Tahoe with my family, and I love continuing that tradition now with a family of my own. My husband and I take our kids there every summer, and I love entertaining our family and friends there—it’s so serene and laid back.

TB. What’s it like being a (new) mom of 3?
JK.

I love being a mom. Once I started a family of my own, my love for entertaining and creating a beautiful home became such a big part of my life. I hope to inspire my children to be thoughtful and mindful as they go through life by raising them in a calm and happy home.

Favorite way to bring nature into your home?
JK.

I love arranging florals. Bringing seasonal blooms into the house is a great way to feel grounded, centered, and connected to the world around me. When I’m entertaining, I always make sure to set the table with natural elements that complement our surroundings, like a few sprigs of pine as a centerpiece during the winter, or a bunch of wildflowers during the summer.

Who or what inspires you?
JK.

I’m inspired by my life in California and its natural landscapes, architecture and warm minimalism. Strong women will always inspire me—I admire a woman who dresses well and never sacrifices her comfort for the sake of fashion. Women who know themselves, who know what they like and what they need will always be a big source of inspiration.
